Eva sent me a picture of the dress she was going to wear and told me she liked my pillbox hats. As the dress had intricate geometrical patterns, as well as some pleating on the skirt, I suggested we tried a custom version of my "Origami Coquette" style hat. Eva's dress being shades of grey, white and black, we opted for a very dark grey satin (an almost black fabric but with a lovely light grey sheen to it).
The "Origami Coquette" has a plain base covered with hat net, then I work with the material to create an interesting pleated structure on the top. This part is the most delicate stage of making this hat. It took me 3 whole days to get the bow-like pleating of Eva's hat right: sewing, tweaking, steaming into shape, changing, redoing until I was totally satisfied with the result. To my great relief, Eva liked the first pictures I sent her, and then told me she loved the hat when she finally received it!
Watching Harry and Meghan's royal wedding knowing one of my little hats was being worn there was a very exciting affair. I must say I was more concerned about seeing Eva than anything else... and finally, seeing her looking so beautiful and stylish, with the hat I'd made for her filled me with great pride.
Truly a highlight of my career as a milliner. Thank you Eva.
